FRANCESCO BORROMINI - Severity as a source of innovation and visionary design

FRANCESCO BORROMINI - Severity as a source of innovation and visionary design

The cultural part of the Annual Report is dedicated to Francesco Borromini (27 September 1599 - 3 August 1667), a famous Ticino architect.

Born in Bison, at the age of 9 he went, on his father's advice, to the Fabbrica del Duomo in Milan where, during his ten-year stay, he acquired, through a complete apprenticeship, the considerable wealth of knowledge that would allow him to express himself, a few years later, through his brilliant architectural works.

He then left the Milan of San Carlo Borromeo, at about 20 years of age, for Rome, the Eternal City, the eldorado of the architectural world, where the young architect found many construction sites in turmoil. He was immediately included in the most important construction site, that of St. Peter's Basilica, where he was appreciated by the workers for his genius and the quality of his designs.

His architectural career develops in all its fullness through his works. Some of them are worth mentioning, such as the church of San Carlo with its four fountains, the famous San Carlino which was later re-proposed by Botta in 1999 on the shores of Lake Lugano, the church of Sant'Ivo alla Sapienza, the church of Sant'Agnese in Agone, the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano, and others.

Borromini has left us a legacy of architectural heritage of great importance: a viatico.
His courageous, imaginative and innovative style and the majesty of his works are still the subject of study and study at an international level.
